Le film « Didi Contractor – Marrying the Earth to the Building » trace un portrait sensible de l’artiste et architecte américaine Didi Contractor (1929-2021), qui a consacré sa pratique à la question de savoir comment l’architecture peut faire partie de notre écosystème et créer des solutions concrètes à l’heure du changement climatique et de la crise énergétique.

L’architecture de Didi Contractor est économique, écologique et durable, une architecture qui puise dans la nature et qui la restitue, qui réunit le paysage, la maison et les habitants. Originaire d’Amérique, elle a suivi son mari en Inde, où elle a travaillé d’abord en tant qu’artiste et designer. Pendant près de 30 ans, en tant qu’architecte dans le nord-ouest de l’Inde, au pied de l’Himalaya, elle s’est imposée contre la modernisation tournée vers l’Occident. Elle a passé sa vie à construire et à aménager avec des matériaux naturels tels que l’argile, l’ardoise, la pierre de rivière et le bambou, qui se trouvaient dans son environnement immédiat.

Didi Contractor considérait la Terre Mère comme notre maison et notre jardin, en harmonie avec la terre, le vent, l’eau et le feu. Elle a donc étudié attentivement la relation entre la lumière, les saisons, le temps et les plantes.

Dans ce documentaire poétique, la réalisatrice Steffi Giaracuni nous ouvre les portes non seulement sur la philosophie profonde et respectueuse de cette femme forte et créative, mais aussi sur ses maisons et leurs habitants, nous sensibilisant ainsi aux questions globales liées à la relation avec notre planète.

The film “Didi Contractor – Marrying the Earth to the Building” draws a sensitive portrait of the American artist and architect Didi Contractor (1929–2021), who in her paxis dealt with the question of how architecture can be part of our ecosystem and create concrete solutions in times of climate change and energy crisis. Didi Contractor’s architecture is economical, ecological and sustainable, an architecture that draws from nature and gives back, uniting landscape, house and inhabitant. Born in America, she followed her husband to India, where she first worked as an artist and designer. In her almost 30 years of work as an architect in northwest India, at the foot of the Himalayas, she stood up to modernisation oriented towards the West. Throughout her life, she built and designed with natural materials such as clay, slate, river stone and bamboo, which were found in the immediate surroundings.

Didi Contractor considered Mother Earth as our home and garden, which is in harmony with earth, wind, water and fire. So she carefully studied how light, seasons, weather and plants relate to each other.

In her poetic documentary, director Steffi Giaracuni not only opens the doors to the profound, respectful philosophy of this strong, creative woman, but also to her homes and their inhabitants, raising our awareness of the global issues of how we treat our planet.
